  Cast Iron Furniture : FAQs

    What is Cast Iron?

An alloy of iron containing so much carbon that it is brittle and so cannot be wrought but must be shaped by casting. Cast Iron is a hard, brittle, nonmalleable iron-carbon alloy, cast into shape, containing 2 to 4.5 % carbon, 0.5 to 3 % silicon, and lesser amounts of sulfur, manganese, and phosphorus. Basically, cast iron solidifies into a heterogeneous alloy with a metallurgic structure composed of more than one constituent. Apart from iron the basic elements of its chemical composition are carbon and silicon.

What is the difference between Cast Iron products and Wrought Iron Products?

Both made of the same basic raw material further reduction of carbon makes them different.

  • Wrought iron can be forged or shaped when it is hot.
  • Cast iron can not bent, cut or forged when hot but can be made liquid and poured into a mold to get desired shape.

Is Cast Iron Equivalent to Steel?

No, Cast iron is not equivalent to Steel. It is a completely different kind of alloy. Although cast iron and steel are both essentially made of iron and carbon, steel generally contains less than 0.5% carbon while cast iron contains more than 2.5%.

Why Cast Iron Furniture is popular?

Produced for hundreds of years, cast iron is often viewed as a low-end, rather cheap material. Day by day advanced and comprehensive knowledge of cast iron qualities have been gained. One of the most important improvements has been its categorization and standardization. The different types of cast iron are now viewed as choice materials with properties that are irreplaceable in many respects.

Cast iron has become so popular because of its esthetics look and long lasting properties as well as possibilities of different style and combinations in designs as per specific requirement have made it first choice for outdoor furniture. It is the antiquated design and natural rust surface that attract people to buy it.

How to Choose the Right Type of Cast Iron?

The selection of a given type of cast iron must essentially be based on its properties, its chemical composition often being incidental. When unaware of the principles governing the properties of cast iron, it is easy to give too much importance to its chemical composition. Caution must be advised in this matter because certain alloying elements can have important negative effects, such as the alteration of the metallic structure, by furthering the presence of certain undesirable inter-metallic compounds.

What types of outdoor furniture are more durable?

Outdoor furniture is made from many different materials. The more durable pieces are made from cast iron, cement, wood and stone. If they are powder-coated they will also last longer. For items made of wood, the harder the wood is the better but needs lots of maintenance. With little care, cast iron is the best option for outdoor furniture and can last indefinitely.

How Cast Iron decorative products are better than Wrought Iron products?

  • Casting of cast iron is cheaper.
  • Integrated decorative design can be produced as per specific requirement in cast iron which is not possible in wrought iron.
  • Cast iron products are corrosion resistant.

    What is Wrought Iron?

Wrought iron is one kind of steel containing 1.1% of carbon. Wrought means any metal that is hammered, twisted or even bent into shape. Basically the metal is forged and formed into the desired form. This differs from cast aluminum, in that the casting process is not utilized. This is also known as hot forged metal as the metal is heated until it reaches its red-hot state.
